Manual work is an inevitability. There are often times where one must simply do something manually. Why? The reason are simple.
- The work is new.
- There exists no good automation tools.
- The level of effort doesn’t constitute automation.
So let’s break these down. First, new work. This basically means a new process, technology, or process has been added to the team. The point is to understand the underlying manual steps to reasonably triage the automation in the case of some error.
Next, no good automation tools exist. For context when we say “tools” we mean any script or product (hardware/software). Sometimes a tool doesn’t exist. The step or action must be manually performed until a tool exists.
Finally, the level effort for automation doesn’t justify the resourcing. The amount of time, or more accurately the amount of value for the time doesn’t justify automation.
