I am by nature and academic. I much prefer academia in lieu of the professional. Often I am asked: “How do the two correlate and interact?”. Generally, they don’t. Academic rigor is rarely moved into the professional realm, at least in my line of work. Often times the introduction of applied theory is also met with disdain and makes one appear pretentious. One has to realize some people don’t care about algorithmic models, software patterns, axis of responsibility, or some code analysis tool you discovered. People just want to do their jobs and get paid.
This does not mean you shouldn’t try to introduce new things. Just introduce new ideas and topics in the right context and setting. Select a low stakes project and try it out. You’ll quickly gain clarity on if the mechanism will work or doesn’t for that organization. Additionally, above all don’t try to revive a dead horse unless someone else takes up the stick. Being pushy, even from a position of power, never ends well.
